Temac: industrial automation and engineering expertise for special converting applications

25 years just celebrated under the company motto “Slitter Engineering”: these two words embody TEMAC ’s true essence as well as its innovative spirit. Thanks to its internal expertise in industrial automation, the company creates real tailor-made solutions for its customers not only for the flexible packaging sector but also for highly specialized ancillary industries where large numbers do not matter, whereas high quality and customized technological solutions mark the difference. We’re talking about it in this article, and we go further into the topic in the video with Massimo Cerliani, the company’s Sales Manager.

March 2000 marked a significant year for Temac. Established less than a year earlier, the company made its debut on the national and international stage at the Plast trade show in Milan’s old fairgrounds. As a newcomer to the Converter editorial team, I visited that edition—one of my first trade fairs—just before heading to the monumental Drupa event. It was at Plast that I met Massimo Cerliani and the newly established Temac. Being here today and tell 25 years of their journey feels like rewinding the tape of time and living once more the excitement of those early days in the fascinating world of printing and converting.

Cerliani Temac

“From the outset, Guido Collavino and I designed slitter-rewinder machines for reel-to-reel cutting,” begins Cerliani. “The components were manufactured by trusted mechanical workshops, while we handled assembly and testing before delivery.” Over time, the company grew, expanding both its team and facilities. Initially based in Lonate Pozzolo (VA), Temac relocated nearly five years ago to its current plant in Cassano Magnago (VA). The new site offers spacious facilities conducive to an industrial production process, enabling the company to increase market share, with 60% of its output now destined to export.

Temac: tailor-made solutions in converting

Temac stabilimentoToday, with a team of about 15 employees, Temac designs and manufactures cutting and rewinding solutions for the flexible packaging industry in a facility conveniently located very close to Malpensa Airport. The extensive expertise of its engineering team has also allowed Temac to venture into non-packaging industries, building its reputation as a reliable global partner capable of transforming customer requests into bespoke technological solutions. A notable example is a slitter-rewinder developed for a Milan-based medical applications company. This machine, designed in collaboration with the client’s technical team, will operate in a cleanroom environment, processing nonwoven materials. Every detail—from ergonomics and automatic reel handling to dust management, temperature control, and even the machine’s color—was meticulously tailored to meet the unique requirements of this specialized production environment.

The crucial role of the slitter-rewinder in converting

“While our technical background has enabled us to develop customized and specialized solutions, we also offer a range of standard products to meet diverse market needs,” Cerliani adds. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining high-quality standards throughout production, starting with components, to ensure reliable, long-lasting technological solutions, sheltering customer and manufacturer from continuous and costly maintenance. This philosophy extends to both customized and standard production lines.

“Many people underestimate the impact of the slitter-rewinder on the finished product, a technology situated at the end of the production line after laminators and advanced printing machines. However, a poorly performing slitter can irreparably damage printed and laminated reels, resulting in significant financial losses. That’s why we stick to high quality standards without compromising, in both our custom and standard lines,” Cerliani underlines. This approach has been a key-element in building strong customer loyalty.

EcoSystemac, the answer to sustainability needs

Temac’s commitment to customer-centric transparency is reflected in its machine architecture. Every hardware component integrates into an open, Windows-based software platform, allowing clients to add hardware and remotely monitor the system. Unlike traditional proprietary operator panels, this approach offers a comprehensive view of all hardware components, enabling Temac to modernize old production lines and transform them into smart, user-friendly converting technologies.

Ecosystemac is a brand developed by Temac that encompasses a series of construction concepts aimed at maximum cost savings and production efficiency, and was born from the idea of developing solutions that respect the environment, health and safety, leveraging the skills and know-how present in the company at electronic and industrial automation level.

“Every machine movement is optimized to reduce electricity and air consumption. Where feasible, we eliminate oil-based systems, reducing maintenance and waste management,” ends up Cerliani.

While unable to disclose details, Cerliani hints at exciting technical developments on the horizon. When all is confirmed, we will be the first to share this news with our readers.
