COIM, a world leader in the chemical sector, has integrated cold sealing adhesives into its portfolio, taking a significant step forward in offering solutions for the packaging sector. The new solutions, presented by COIM at Drupa, have attracted strong interest from potential users.
Cold sealing is a technology that allows the cold adhesion of surfaces, eliminating the need to apply heat during the process of welding and sealing of packages. This type of sealing is widely used in various sectors, including food, pharmaceutical and industrial packaging, due to its efficiency and convenience.
“The integration of cold sealing adhesive materials allows COIM to expand its offering in the market of sustainable and advanced packaging. This expansion of our product range is aimed at creating new collaborations and partnerships, as well as to increase market share in strategic sectors for COIM. Furthermore, COIM’s reputation as a leader in chemical innovation is further consolidated, strengthening the trust of customers and stakeholders”, says Luca Gianzini, Marketing and M&A Manager at COIM.
COIM’s decision to continue developing its range of packaging solutions, including cold sealing solutions, is dictated by the desire to respond to the needs of a market increasingly oriented towards sustainability and innovation.
The benefits of this packaging technology
From the point of view of environmental sustainability and energy consumption reduction cold sealing has remarkable advantages. It does not require heat for packaging, contributing to obtain COIM’s environmental sustainability objectives (Objective 3), decreasing the carbon footprint and improving the overall energy efficiency of production processes.
“Also in terms of operational efficiency, cold coating application allows for faster packaging times, increases productivity without compromising quality and reduces downtime; cold sealing can be applied to a wide range of materials, making it extremely versatile and adaptable to the different needs of COIM’s customers. This expands the application possibilities in various industrial sectors and allows the use of a wide spectrum of substrates, including those in mono-material polyolefins and paper, with clear benefits in terms of compatibility with mechanical recycling processes, as required by the recently approved Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)”, says dr. Marco Capecchi, Business Development Manager Adhesives EMEA.
Also ensured safety and health of workers: this technology does not require the use of solvents as it is water-based.
Quality, reliability and resistance: cold sealing offers excellent cold adhesion properties, ensuring a safe and durable sealing even at low temperatures, this is particularly important for food and pharmaceutical packaging, where the integrity of the sealing is crucial. Cold coatings are known for their resistance to external agents, such as humidity and temperature variations, ensuring reliable protection of packaged products.
COIM offers a complete portfolio for packaging
The ongoing dialogue with converting companies and important brands in the food sector, together with the new regulations recently entered into force, highlight how cold sealing is potentially able to respond to a large part of the emerging requests in the world of flexible packaging. The intrinsic characteristics of this technology, in fact, offer the possibility of adhering, sealing and producing sustainable packaging, thanks to processes that do not require the aid of high sealing temperatures and with the possibility of being compatible and applicable on the wide spectrum of new recyclable and compostable materials.
“These considerations have driven us to create the innovative line of NOVACOTE® CS sealing adhesives and to present it at the recent Drupa. Choosing Drupa to present the new product portfolio for cold sealing was a strategic decision: Drupa offered excellent visibility at an international level, allowing COIM to reach a large audience of potential customers and create new partnerships with important market players such as OEMs and brands in the food sector. Drupa has always been a point of reference to know innovations, technological news and market trends, so the fair was the ideal place to present an innovative product, confirming COIM’s ambition to consolidate itself as one of the leading companies in the flexible packaging sector. The interest shown by the public was truly surprising and despite only a few weeks have passed since the event, we have received a high number of requests, following which converting campaigns have already been carried out with our cold sealing adhesives on many structures, multilayer laminates and mono-films, where they have been applied in combination with the innovative cyclohexane free release lacquer with full polyamide base NOVACOTE® RL 0604”, says Marco Capecchi.
The NOVACOTE® CS line stands out from the usual offer on the market thanks to innovative formulations both in terms of regulations and performance, guaranteeing very high packaging speeds, excellent sealing characteristics and durability of the packaging, together with high food safety standards.
COIM is committed to invest resources and human capital in innovation in the flexible packaging sector
COIM’s ongoing research activity cannot ignore the creation of new adhesives for lamination and functional coatings that allow the creation of plastic and cellulose-based single-material, and compostable packaging with high functional properties in terms of conservation, consumer safety, shelf life and sustainability.
“There is still a lot brewing in our laboratories: in fact, in these weeks we are defining a path that will take us, starting from the next trade fairs such as FachPach 2024, up to the important K 2025 fair, to the regular presentation of our new solutions for a sustainable converting process and capable of guaranteeing a better future for everyone”, concludes Luca Gianzini.
